3 Ideas in 2 Minutes on Playing the Long Game
Long-Term vs. Short-Term, Playing Fair & Tactical Battles
I. Long-Term vs. Short-Term
Investor and Chief Executive Philosopher Naval Ravikant keeps it simple:
All self-help boils down to ‘choose long-term over short-term’.
II. Playing Fair
Canadian psychologist Jordan B. Peterson on what it means to play fair:
Your parents say: ‘It doesn’t matter whether you win or lose.’ (This is a Piagetian observation.) ‘It’s how you play the game.’ What does that mean?
It means that you should play the game in a manner that increases the probability that you’re going to be invited to play many games in the future. So you master the skills of the game, but at the same time you master a set of meta-skills, which are the skills that remain constant across transforming sets of games.
And that’s what it means to play fair.
—Jordan B. Peterson, Personality 06: Jean Piaget & Constructivism
III. Tactical Battles
Fighter pilot turned leadership instructor Dave Berke on the difference between tactical (short-term) battles and strategic (long-term) ones:
A tactical battle that you need to win isn’t a tactical battle.
—Dave Berke, Jocko Podcast #266
Ergo, don’t waste resources on short-term wins. Unless they have implications for your long-term goals. In which case they’re not short-term to begin with. 🐘
Have a great week,
